Google Local Search Ranking Factors

Getting top ranks on Google local search is much more important for some businesses than getting their websites ranked on standard version of google search. But not enough is known about the factors which affect rankings on www.google.com/local

I have tried to put some light on the factors which can get your business listing on top positions of Google local search.

  1. Local business address in the city of search.
  2. Information from major data providers like yellow pages and local directories. So submitting your website on local directories will help a lot.
  3. Associating local business listing with proper categories.
  4. Claim your local business listing if it is not yet claimed on google maps.
  5. Include keywords related to your product or service in the title of your local business listing on google maps.
  6. Geo links and geo references are very critical to success if there is a lot of competition in your category or area.
  7. Number of customer reviews associated with your local business listing on google plays a very important role. I have noticed that the rankings in many competitive niches are actually ordered by the number of reviews present.
  8. On-Page factors don’t have very high importance on google local search but in very high competition markets, they should not be ignored.
  9. Mentioning your complete address on your website’s contact page is a very important factor as this is a trusted signal for Google.
  10. Including keywords related to your product or service in the description of your local business listing is a very important factor.
  11. Keywords of your location in the title of your local business listing.
  12. Keywords of your location in the description of your local business listing.

A seven step scheme for search engine optimization

As the internet is day by day enveloping with myriad websites on the same, the importance for and the need of Search Engine Optimization is on continuous rise. And you can too go for the strategies which most top ranking sites are using and making most from their internet marketing efforts. It’s not always the money that pays but also the selection of right way to reach the final destination. The sites that are on top follow some basic strategy in search engine optimization. These strategies available for you here are very easy to follow and also do not cost much or say cost nothing to give to practice. So we begin now:

  1. Manually register your site with an Open Directory Project, DMOZ. It is the most comprehensive human edited directory available on the web and the largest one too. The Open Directory Project is constructed and conserved by a huge global community of volunteer editors and feeds other leading web directories.
  2. Visit google and manually submit your site there, for faster inclusion. Even if you have listed your site in open directory it takes time for google to eventually spider your site and put it in the listings related to your keywords and site name, so to make it quicker and submit manually to google as well.
  3. At yahoo you can purchase a listing for $299 fee and Yahoo will include you in their directory that maintains website like Yahoo!, MSN and AltaVista.
  4. Using a high KEI keyword is important here. Such a measure will take into account the popularity and the competitiveness of your keywords. This in turn increases your chance for getting selected by the search engines at little or no expense at all.
  5. Heard of a link building campaign? Yeah, that is what you need to be engaged in, as the more links you have the more important you become. Especially if the links you are having are having a high google ranking, it will signal google and other search engines about your site. For fast link building some good ways are to submit articles to article directories.
  6. An easy-to-crawl site would be better than a site with dynamic pages. This will help the search engines to easily locate you, although with the arrival of Google site maps things are changing but we need to make sure that all search engines are able to travel across your website. So make a point to use HTML coding and avoid pages that are created dynamically.
  7. After all these careful efforts one is required to be patient. After following the guidelines you should wait and allow search engines to re-index your site. Though it is internet but it takes some time at least for search engines optimization to take a hold.

By carrying out this scheme your efforts to search engine optimize will generate positive returns. Also it is important to learn continuously about latest techniques and requirements in search engines for improving your results as their world are continually evolving.

Ten Guidelines that will help boost your Search Engine Rankings

This article will be helping you in understanding the basic principles of search engine optimization(SEO). The changing algorithms of search engine leave many of the online sellers discouraged and irritated. And here we’ll be telling you the tips that will reduce your frustration as well as help you in increasing your rankings. These include those basic principles which have remained through the years. Let’s look at them one by one.

  1. At times we find that after so many efforts and appropriate phrasing of articles, still no result show up in the searches and there we do a mistake of quickly changing our domain name. So the first point to keep in mind is that don’t be too quick at changing the domain names. It takes up to a year for keyword to show up in searches. Google has aging delay for any new article so be patient.
  2. Target the audience not the search engine.  When you’ll focus on the impression your site will create on the audience a better site will come up that the viewers will appreciate and the engines will like as well.
  3. Extensive Keyword research is very much important to get best results as every other thing revolve around the keyword phrase that you select. If you need suggestions about the words that people are searching for world over the following information data base could be of help.  http://WordTracker.com and http://KeywordDiscovery.com
  4. Giving a structure to a site is important not only in its visual appreciation by the user but also in optimization. So while designing and categorizing your site’s architecture and navigation base it on your keyword research. A keyword phrase could be used as your navigation word if possible. Jill Whalen, the founder of highrankings.com phrase it as “Your homepage should be optimized for the more general phrases…Your inner pages should be optimized for the more specific [ones].”
  5. A site should be programmed in such a way that it be a “crawler” friendly one. “Crawlers” are sent by search engines to gather information from your site to help them in knowing how to rank your site. To create a crawler friendly site create your links using HTML and not JavaScript. As crawlers won’t be able to read information in JavaScript. Also make sure that your copy is not graphic of a text else the crawler will see it as blank page. Don’t design the site in Flash if you want the crawler to read, interpret the information and classify your site.
  6. The internal text links and clickable image ALT attributes should be labeled as descriptively as possible.  Inside the text links, use the phrase that describes the page you’re clicking to and for the image links, the phrases are to be enclosed in the image’s code.
  7. In your site, select your key pages and choose some keyword phrases that is chiefly for a that page only and work those phrases into a copy. After this write a powerful copy for those key pages of your site using your chosen keyword phrases.
  8. The Title tags are very important as it is the information which appears in search engine results. So the point is, you need to fit in your key word phrases into each page’s title tag unique to them. However, just not overcrowd the title only with the keywords; the title tag needs to be informative and attractive to the viewers as well.
  9. A link-worthy site helps the search engine to judge its popularity. That is, more number of links pointing to your site reflects the popularity of the site. So make sure that people want to link to your site and for this you have to have something that you can offer worth linking to. Yes the product or services do count here, but beyond this if you want to reach the top other things that are help are: great variety, an information service, excellent presentation.
  10. Whalen says “If you can rank highly for a good portion of them, they’re going to add up to a lot more than just that one keyword phrase that you think is the good big money one.” That is, do not stick to any one keyword or phrase only. Its better that you optimize for all the applicable phrases.

So now you know what 10 points formula for SEO success is. Be patient, target the site for the audience, do extensive keyword research, give structure to the site basing it on keyword research, create your links using HTML making it crawler friendly, label internal text links and clickable image descriptively, while writing choose the keyword phrases that apply to that particular page, make attractive title tags incorporating keyword phrases in them, try to have many links pointing to your site, and don’t stick to only one keyword phrase.

What is a web crawler or “Spider”?

Web crawler or a spider is a computer program that browses the World Wide Web in a systamatic and automated manner. Other terms for Web crawlers are ants, automatic indexers, bots or Web spider, Web robot.

Many sites, specially search engines, like google, yahoo, askjeeves use spidering as a means of providing up-to-date data. Web crawlers are mainly used to create a copy of all the visited pages for later processing by a search engine that will index the downloaded pages to provide fast searches. Crawlers can also be used for automating maintenance tasks on a Web site, such as checking links or validating HTML code.

A Web crawler is one type of bot, or software agent. In general, it starts with a list of URLs to visit, called the seeds. As the crawler visits these URLs, it identifies all the hyperlinks in the page and adds them to the list of URLs to visit, called the crawl frontier. URLs from the frontier are recursively visited according to a set of policies.

In simple search engine terms, a “spider” is an electronic robot that travels the web examining websites in order to add them to a search engine database and rank them according to the specific ranking criteria for that search engine. Most search engines use spiders to quickly and efficiently canvass the web for information.

Boost your Alexa rankings instantly

Alexa rank is one of the important criteria used to judge your website by advertisers and other webmasters. Still most of the webmasters have no clue what all they can do to boost their Alexa rankings organically.

Alexa’s ranking algorithm ranks websites using the data it receives from the Alexa toolbar. Unfortunately not all people who may visit your website have Alexa toolbar installed, because of which those visitors won’t be noticed by Alexa.

However there is another easier way to make sure that all your website visitors get noticed by Alexa. That can be done by simply placing the Alexa widget on your website. This will ensure that every unique visitor and page views get counted by Alexa. This method will show instant results and you will notice the benefits from the first week itself.

You can get Alexa widget code for your website here-

Importance of Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is a method of increasing the amount of visitors and the awareness of a website by ranking high in the search engines. The higher the rank of a website in the result of the search engines the better the chance the website will be visited by users.

If a use performs a search for a specific keyword or keyword phases, so a website which his rank high will then be seen in the first or second page of the search engines result. Search engine optimization helps to guarantee that the website is available to a search engine and enhances the chances that the website will be found by the search engines.

Statistically, the search engines deliver to websites more than 40% of the traffic. The rest comes from other online channels like traffic exchanges, banner exchanges, social bookmarking sites, link advertisements, forum signatures and so on.

For a Online Business (Website), it is necessary to be on Top 10 Ranking in all the major search engines. To explain the importance of Search Engine Optimization, read the following few lines taken from a survey result.

“The Role of Search in Business to Business Buying Decisions” is a well-designed study of approximately 1500 participants responding to a 40-question survey

* When participants were asked to indicate how they would go about making a B2B purchase, 93.2 percent said they would research the purchase online.
* When asked if they would use a search engine at some point in this task, 95.5 percent of participants indicated that they would use search engines to find out the the desired product.
* When asked where they would start their search for information, 63.9 percent of participants chose a search engine over consumer review sites, e-commerce sites, manufacturer’s sites, and industry portals.
* When taking budget into consideration, manufacturer’s sites and industry portals were the chosen starting place as budgets increased. However, 86.9 percent of participants said they would visit a search engine after visiting those sites.

What is KEI and how do I use it?

KEI stands for Keyword Effectiveness Index. KEI is a ranking system based on how popular a key word is and how much competition it has on the Internet. The higher the KEI number, the more popular your keywords are and the less competition they have. It also means that you’ll have a much better chance getting ranked high on a search engine. A low KEI score means not many people are searching for that keyword and it has too much competition. Hence, eliminate all KEI scores with a low number and choose those with a high KEI score. The higher the score, the more profitable your keywords will be to your web site.

Lost your search engine rankings? Find out why..

It can be a frightening experience. You check your rankings and suddenly they have either plummeted or are non-existent. Your swallow hard and feel sick to your stomach. It’s happened to all of us and here are a few possible explanations.

Fluctuation
This is the most common explanation and happens on a daily basis. Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) are in a constant state of flux with Google leading the pack. Gone are the days of the “Google Dance”. This has also meant, unfortunately, that you can be Top 10 one day and disappear the next. The only thing you can do in this case is be patient and give it a few days to see if your ranking reappear.

Stop or Poison Words
Have you added new content lately? It is possible you have added what Google calls “Stop” or “Poison” words. These may include Adult words or commonly words like Links, Search Engine, Bookmarks, Resources, Directory, BBS, Paid-to-Surf and Forum which although won’t knock you out of the SERPs, they can drop you a few spots

Broken Links
Major Search Engines view a site with dead end links as “broken”. In some cases this can cause a major hit to your rankings. It is always advised to run a check using a tool like a Broken Link Checker and fixing them. I have seen a site rebound time after time within days of fixing this issue

Links to Bad Neighborhoods
A single link to a banned site or a bad neighborhood can torpedo your rankings. A banned site can usually be shown by a site that had previously been indexed but is no longer in Google. A grey toolbar can indicate either a new site or one that has been banned. A bad neighborhood is one that employs black hat tactics. This may include a link farm. Link Farms are one of the most often asked about things and the general rule of thumb is “If it looks like one, it is one”. Avoid linking to sites with hundreds of links on its pages with little to no content

Use of Black Hat Methods
This will usually result in an all out ban and includes things like Hidden Text, Cloaking, etc
To get back into the index usually requires you to remove the offending method and email Google (or whichever SE banned you) asking to be reindexed. In most cases you will be succesful although be prepared to wait several weeks if not months

These are just a few of the reasons for a sudden loss in rankings though the most common. The best rule of thumb is to always build and SEO for visitors first and Search Engines second. If you try to stick to this, you should enjoy more stable rankings without the fear of your site dissapearing overnight.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

1. An algorithm update.

An algo update is different from a “regular database update”. In case of a database update, you will possibly regain your positions without doing anything in a few days. However in an algo update, you will have to study the new ranking criterias based on the search results. This could be very difficult if you are unfamiliar of SEO practices and this is the reason why it is said that SEO is an ongoing process and not a one time thing.

2. Site update at your end.

You would have added new content on your webpage that is in search engine results. Generally a change of about 5-10% is considered as fine and you will not see a fall in your ranks. However a change much more than that might be an indication that some large amount of data has been added / replaced and is needed to be reindexed / analysed. In this time of reindexing, the search engine may not put your web site on the position that you have seen it earlier on. This is possibly viewed as a “site redoing” by search engines and to maintain the quality of the SERP’s they may drop your page for a very short time from the position. The retaining of positions will depend on factors like the relevancy of the data to the keywords, richness of the data popularly known as content value, uniqueness (no duplicate content), and use of black hat seo techniques on the pages. The percentage calculated includes the html coding, javascripts, content, and other factors. An example I can mention here is “adding many pages to a web site suddenly”. The listings are generally dropped and only if the content is found qualitative, the position retained. But if found to be some automatic generated content, then it’s possible that the listing be dropped for a long time. Search engines list pages and not web sites in SERPs but do consider the whole web site when listing a single page in the SERPs. If adding poor content to a website can drop a quality page from that web site, then it is sure that if poor content be added to the page itself, it drops in listings.
It is best to consult your SEO before making changes to your pages. If you have not followed any black hat techniques, then this could be a possible reason for a drop in listings.
